Bicycle Security Requirements
Sundays Insurance requires that you take reasonable security precautions to keep your bike protected. Failing to meet these conditions may affect your claim.
At home:
- When your bicycle is inside your home, garage, or outbuilding and you are not home, all doors and windows must be locked.
- If you are home but not in the garage, the garage must be locked.
- Bikes stored in a common area (e.g., parking garage, building foyer) must be locked to an immovable object with an approved lock.
Away from home:
- If your bike is left unattended (out of your direct line of sight or more than 5 meters away), it must be locked through the frame to an immovable object using an approved lock.
- Exception: If your bike is less than 5 meters away and in your direct line of sight the entire time (e.g., during a café stop), it does not need to be locked.
While being transported:
- If left unattended in or on a vehicle, your bike must be: kept inside a securely locked vehicle, locked through the frame to a properly fixed bike rack with an approved lock, locked inside an enclosed boot, or kept inside a fully enclosed locked trailer.
- Outside of daylight hours: If your bike is inside a vehicle, it must be locked through the frame to a secure anchor point. If fitted to a bike rack outside of daylight hours, it is not covered.
Approved locks: Sundays Insurance has a list of approved locks that meet minimum security requirements. You can find the approved lock specifications at sundaysinsurance.ca/approved-locks. If you're unsure whether your lock qualifies, contact us at (877) 621-6940 Ext. 1.
How to lock properly: Always lock through the frame and any quick-release wheels, and then to an immovable object.
