E-Bike Insurance — What You Need to Know

To be eligible for a Sundays Insurance policy, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be over 18 years of age
  • Be a resident of Canada (in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, or Nova Scotia)
  • Be the owner of the bicycle
  • Not be a sponsored or professional cyclist

Your bicycle must also be located in Canada at the time you apply, and it must be used recreationally only — not for professional use, courier services, or the carriage of passengers.

Who is not eligible:

  • Professional cyclists (those who ride or race as their primary source of income)
  • Sponsored cyclists (those who receive $2,500+ in financial or non-financial support from sponsors in a 12-month period)
  • Couriers or individuals using bikes for commercial delivery
  • Trikes and Tricycles

Bicycle eligibility:

  • Your bike must have a market value of at least $300
  • Online quotes are available for bikes valued up to $21,500
  • Bikes purchased new must have been bought within the past five years for an online quote (older bikes may still be covered — call to discuss)
  • E-bikes must be electric pedal-assist bikes that comply with provincial law; retrofitted, throttle-only, or homemade e-bikes are not eligible
  • Under provincial guidelines, only the following bikes are insurable:

    • Traditional-style Class 1 bikes governed to a maximum speed of 32 km/hour
    • Class 2 e-bikes with pedal assist and a throttle, governed to a maximum speed of 32 km/hour
